images are worth repeating.
Maybe not always. (An anti-GIF rant)
This web site doesn't feature any GIF picture. GIF is an obsolete graphic format based on a not very efficient data compression method known as LZW. Unisys and IBM hold a patent on LZW. Every software (even freeware downloaded from the internet) that uses the LZW must have a written license agreement or statement signed by Unisys. They claimed that patents on LZW were filed in the U.S., Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the U.K.. The Unisys patent expired on 20 June 2003 in the USA, in Europe it expired on 18 June 2004, in Japan it expired on 20 June 2004 and in Canada on 7 July 2004. The U.S. IBM patent expires 11 August 2006. If you care about freedom, or don't want to feel the fear or become a victim of contributory infringement to Unisys, it is logical to stop using GIFs. You can read more detailed information on the GNU website.
There's also a stronger motivation to ban GIF from all your graphic thoughts: that is, the fact that GIFs are usually popular between Windoze users. GIF is lame: 8bit colors, poor photographic rendering, bad compression technology, and even a patent on top. For some reasons it's widely used.
The alternative is PNG (Portable Network Graphics). Free, high performance with all kind of images, more features (e.g.: transparency), lossless compression and now widely supported. So I decided to adopt it.
PNG is a W3C standard. You can find the complete PNG specification (v. 1.0) at W3C web site. Version 1.2 of the standard is available here at the PNG home. The PNG home page is written and mantained by Greg Roelofs, and it's a complete source for all your PNG needs: history, specifications, features, list of apps that support the format, etc.. All of it is written with so much enthusiasm! I believe that enthusiasm is logical. Go PNG!
And now, for an imaginary something....
ArtMatic creations
I develop images with ArtMatic as a way to create life inside a well-delimited world. I believe life can be generated by mathematical means without annihilating the randomness, joy, freedom that's built in every life form. In a picture you can see the entire life of the universe.
