Leggo oggi da Repubblica una notizia (ovviamente a fondo pagina) che spiega meglio di tante analisi lo stato dell’ItaGlia nel 2007:

GOOGLE ha indetto un super concorso da 10 milioni di dollari, per gli sviluppatori di software per cellulari, sulla nuova piattaforma Android: peccato che dall’Italia non vi si possa partecipare.

“Il problema è che le norme italiane ci avrebbero obbligato a lungaggini – fanno sapere da Google – e non avremmo potuto far partire il concorso nei tempi previsti. Stiamo valutando se inserire l’Italia in un secondo momento, a concorso già iniziato”.

In questo caso infatti credo che si applichino le nobili regole del concorso a premi (stile lotteria) (LOL):

1. Google dovrebbe depositare una somma di garanzia, in anticipo, per coprire l’intero valore del concorso solo per lanciare il concorso in Italia;
2. in Italia i premi dovrebbero essere assegnati in presenza di un notaio e di un rappresentante di un’associazione dei consumatori riconosciuta;
3. Google dovrebbe compilare moduli e fare registrare il concorso da due ministeri e dai monopoli di Stato;
4. I premi non ritirati devono essere donati a associazioni no-profit elencate in modo esplicito nelle regole del concorso.

Confrontiamo la mortifera burocrazia italica con (per esempio) il pullulare di startup della Bay Area/Silicon Valley, dove per mettere su un’azienda basta firmare due moduli e ti liberi in mezz’ora. Gli USA, con tutto il male che si può dire di questo Paese, sono popolati da una vera “scena” di ragazzi che per passione si mettono insieme, in 4 o 5, fondano un’azienda (come si mette su un gruppo musicale), e se le cose vanno bene danno lavoro a tanti altri ragazzi. E’ così che nasce il progresso: dal basso. Così sono nate la Apple, Google, Flickr, Yahoo, tutto il Web 2.0. Con Poche Pugnette.

Chiedo a Prodi: perchè è facile mettere su un gruppo musicale e non è facile mettere su un’azienda in Italia? Sono entrambe espressioni di creatività. Perchè bloccare la creatività? Perchè lamentarsi che non c’è lavoro, quando è impossibile crearlo?

Motivi polititici a parte, solo uno stato del Canada e i residenti italiani sono esclusi. Per TUTTI gli altri stati del mondo, nessun problema. Rendiamocene conto.

Net neutrality is a pretty basic subject about the future of the internet. You are either in favor, or not. Why is Senator McCain’s position so convoluted? How about a simple yes or no. (‘Cos there’s no maybe, really.)

Question: Let’s talk about net neutrality. It’s probably the most important issue in Silicon Valley, and yet it rarely makes its way to Washington-level consciousness. Barack Obama recently came out saying that he would promise to make it a priority if he became president. What is your position on the net neutrality issue?

McCain Answer: In general, I think we need to move to a different model for thinking about the FCC. I think it should focus on policing clearly anti-competitive behavior and consumer predators. But, frankly, until some foul has been committed, I don’t think it should be interfering in the market, and probably shouldn’t be trying to micromanage American business and innovation. This is a very tough issue, because if you look at the extremes of it, then, obviously it has significant consequences – you can’t restrain the market, you can’t say that people can’t make a living or a profit off of the Internet. That obviously is not the intent of why the Internet was invented, and the reason why it has flourished. So what I would like to do is keep an eye on what goes on with the Internet, whether people are taking unfair advantage of it, whether people are being ripped off, and how this thing progresses. The great thing about the Internet is that it has enjoyed, to a large degree, immunity from federal interference and federal regulation. So, I have a tendency to say, look, let’s see how this thing all turns out, rather than anticipate something that, a problem that so far has not arisen in any significant way. I know that sounds a little bit equivocal, but it has a lot to do with my reluctance to use, my inclination to use government intervention only when it’s absolutely necessary.

I’ve been working with the Blender guys to add support for 3Dconnexion devices in this great open source app, and it’s been really rewarding. The blender community is really receptive with a great “can-do” attitude without compromising their GPL-based principles, and I really respect that. It’s kind of a honor really to work with them from a corporate stall and I am grateful to them and my company for that.

Our work is public and available, although very experimental at this point. The Blender Foundation created a branch just for this effort, so just get the source and compile it:

In a few days some already made builds will be available from blenderbuilds.com.

Then you need a plugin. I have prepared zip files which include source code, a ready-to-use build and instructions (for Mac OS X, Linux and even Windoze), which you can download from here (get the latest of course):

After you compile and install the plugins you should be able to use 3Dconnexion devices with Blender.

I am still looking for a decent 1-click disc burner app for OS X but I think I found the worst. Disco has a very sleek GUI that also features a cool smoke animation when you burn the disc. Unfortunately, the entire system (Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz w/ ATI Mobility Radeon 9700) slows down so much that it becomes un-usable when the “smoke” option is on: I get the spinning wheel even for just opening menus, typing text, moving the text caret with the arrow keys or by pointing with the mouse. Disabling the smoke improves things a lot, but the overall user experience is still dog slow. This could be featured in the Worst Engineering and Design parade.
So far I think the best CD copy tool for OS X is Zenopolis’ CDRevolution.
