Software patents in Europe

Europe is continuing to grant patents on algorithms and business methods (contrary to the letter and spirit of the existing law). Software patents are illogical. Traditionally, patents are used for concrete and physical inventions. But software is based on abstractions, like mathematics, physics and other disciplines: if software is patentable, anything is patentable. Why not make songs patentable, then? Software is an example of how institutions and society in general are unable to adapt fast enough in a changing, decentralized environment proposed by practices like free software and open source activities. You can do something about this: see http://swpat.ffii.org/index.en.html.
